No-Input Mixing is an experimental technique that involves creating a feedback loop by sending the mixer output back to the input. This approach allows for the generation of a diverse range of unusual and captivating electronic sounds. The NoInputMixer application meticulously simulates an analog mixing console and effects rack, enabling users to craft a multitude of feedback configurations enhanced with additional effects.
This technique provides sound designers with a unique avenue to explore unconventional methods of sound creation. The outcomes often consist of eerie soundscapes ideal for projects in the realms of science fiction, dystopia, and horror. These results may manifest as peculiar noises, disrupted signals, malfunctioning communication, buzzing drones, defective machinery sounds, futuristic technological effects, and glitchy elements.
One drawback of this methodology, which might intimidate novices, is its inherent unpredictability and instability. Even the slight adjustment of a mixer knob can bring about drastic and unexpected changes to the sound. The features of NoInputMixer encompass a seven-channel mixer and an effects rack with eight slots. Each effects slot can function as an insert effect for a mixer channel or be utilized with two send/return buses. Users have the choice between hi-res or lo-fi sound processing for the effects. Furthermore, each mixer channel incorporates an algorithmic noise generator capable of producing various noise types that can be integrated into the feedback signal or used independently.
Additional attributes not commonly found in traditional mixers are provided in this application, including options like preamp tube type selection, op-amp type selection, adjustment of the overload protection circuit, and other functionalities that significantly broaden the scope for audio experimentation. The user interface can present itself as either a classic mixer layout or comprehensive control for individual channels.
NoInputMixer serves as a versatile application compatible with iOS and macOS devices. It functions seamlessly on iPhones and iPads and is optimized for Mac or MacBooks featuring M1 chips or later iterations. NoInputMixer is functional independently on iPhones and iPads or can be integrated as an Audio Unit or Inter-App Audio module while supporting Audiobus and Ableton Link. On MacOS, NoInputMixer operates both as a standalone application and as an Audio Unit (AUv3) compatible with DAWs and other hosts supporting AUv3 plugins. All features available on iOS and macOS include MIDI support with a MIDI learn option and customizable audio unit parameters.
